Starting this Thursday, two hospitals in Zhuhai—Sun Yat-sen University Affiliated Fifth Hospital and Zhuhai People's Hospital—will begin piloting the "Elderly Medical Voucher" scheme within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The program allows eligible Hong Kong seniors to use medical vouchers to pay for designated outpatient medical and nursing services at these facilities.
With the addition of these two hospitals, the total number of service points within the GBA accepting medical vouchers increases to 11, benefiting over 1.78 million eligible Hong Kong elderly residents.

The vouchers can be used across various outpatient departments at the new sites, including internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, among others. The scheme also applies to shared medical vouchers for spouses and the "Elderly Medical Voucher Rewards Pilot Scheme."
All services under the pilot program are charged in Chinese Renminbi, with hospitals displaying the applicable monthly conversion rate at billing counters for seniors’ reference. A government spokesperson reminded seniors that they cannot use medical vouchers in conjunction with the national medical insurance for the same service.
Similar to Hong Kong, the scope of services eligible for voucher use in mainland China excludes inpatient services, pre-paid medical services, and daytime surgical procedures. Vouchers cannot be used for purchasing items, medication, medical equipment, or supplies, nor can they be exchanged for cash.
This initiative aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for elderly Hong Kong residents traveling within the GBA, promoting convenient, cross-boundary medical services while maintaining consistent usage guidelines.
