The Hospital Authority has unveiled its new Support Services Center in North Lantau, a significant addition to Hong Kong's public healthcare infrastructure. This state-of-the-art facility aims to bolster the support services essential for the smooth operation of public hospitals, addressing the growing demand for healthcare services in the region.
Addressing the Growing Healthcare Needs
With Hong Kong's population on the rise and an aging demographic, the demand for public healthcare services has surged. The Hospital Authority, recognizing the need for comprehensive support services, has established the Support Services Center to complement its clinical services. This initiative is part of the Hospital Authority's broader "First Hospital Development Plan," which includes various hospital reconstruction and expansion projects.

Key Features of the Support Services Center
The Support Services Center, spanning approximately 62,000 square meters, houses several critical facilities:
Central Laundry Facility: Capable of handling a substantial volume of laundry, this facility is designed to meet half of the Hospital Authority's laundry needs by 2030.
Central Food Production Unit: This unit will manage a significant portion of the meal preparation for patients, also aiming to meet half of the Hospital Authority's dietary service requirements by 2030.
IT Data Center: Equipped to accommodate 500 IT equipment racks, this data center will support the Hospital Authority's digital infrastructure.
Central Emergency Reserve Room: This room will store essential emergency protective equipment and supplies, ensuring readiness for any pandemic, disaster, or emergency situation.
Sustainable and Efficient Design
The Support Services Center is designed with a focus on operational efficiency and sustainability. The building incorporates various green technologies, including photovoltaic systems, solar light pipes, sensor-controlled lighting and sanitary facilities, and electric vehicle charging systems. Additionally, a heat recovery system has been implemented to repurpose waste heat from the laundry and steam boilers for use within the facility.
Enhancing Employee Well-being
The design also prioritizes the well-being of the staff. The center features green garden spaces, natural lighting, and ventilation, creating a comfortable working environment. The layout includes separate floors for different functions to enhance infection control and streamline workflows.
Future Plans and Developments
The completion of the Support Services Center marks a significant milestone in the Hospital Authority's efforts to modernize and expand public healthcare services. Alongside this project, the Hospital Authority is also working on the reconstruction and expansion of several hospitals, including the Queen Mary Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, and the construction of a new acute hospital in the Kai Tak Development Area.
The Support Services Center is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of public healthcare services in Hong Kong, ensuring that the city's healthcare system is well-equipped to meet future challenges.
